The Wilder Edge

Where the backyard meets the creek and the horse meadow begins β€” Owl Eyes country, every single step.

The most exciting and most important zone to approach carefully. The creek and meadow edge require Owl Eyes, a Safety Pilot, and deep respect.

🌿 What Grows Here

🌾

Creek Cane

Tall native cane along the creek bank providing important habitat. Do not push through it β€” it's someone's home.

🌿

Wild Muscadine Grape

A native grape vine scrambling through the trees. Small dark grapes important to wildlife and historically to people.

🌺

Cardinal Flower

Brilliant red wildflowers in wet spots near the creek edge. Hummingbirds and butterflies cannot resist them.

πŸ„

Creek Bank Mushrooms

After rain, mushrooms appear on logs along the creek bank. Look but never touch β€” some are not safe to handle.

🌱

Wild Violets

Small purple flowers that carpet the meadow edge in early spring. One of the first wildflowers to bloom.

Grandma's Story Corner

Pull up a chair, sugar. Let me tell you about this place.

I want to be honest with you about the Wilder Edge: this is the part of the backyard that asks the most of you. Not because it's dangerous if you're careful β€” it isn't. But because it asks you to slow all the way down and look before you step, reach, or sit. Every single time.

But oh, the rewards for those who come here carefully. The sound of the Spring Peepers on the first warm March night is something I've been hearing for seventy years and it still makes me catch my breath. Tootie stands perfectly still at the fence when she hears them. The frogs make her quiet. That tells you something.

The Wilder Edge isn't scary when you know what you're looking for. It's the most honest piece of nature we have β€” and it's right here in our backyard.
