Scott’s Nut Map

Go outside with a grown-up during the morning or late afternoon. Bring paper, a pencil, and a few small safe objects, such as pebbles, acorns, or seed pods. Choose one tree or shrub to draw. Mark where you see roots, branches, leaves, shade, and open ground. Now pretend you are Scott. Where would you hide a nut so it stays dry and hard for another animal to find? Put a small X on your map. Then make two more hiding places. Do not bury real food in the yard unless a grown-up says it is okay. This is a map game, not a reason to start a squirrel pantry under Grandma’s flowers. Then answer these questions: Where would Scott find the best climbing path? Where could a hawk see him? Where could Scott hide a pecan? What would make a hiding place unsafe? What other animals might look for the same pecan? How can forgotten nuts help grow trees? Grandma’s reminder: “Scott has a system. The problem is nobody else gets a copy of the map.”
