Bucky’s Oak-Leaf Search

Go outside with a grown-up and look for oak trees or oak leaves. Oak leaves often have rounded or pointed lobes, depending on the type of oak. Look from the ground or use a fallen leaf. Do not touch any caterpillars you find. Draw an oak leaf, an oak twig, and a safe spot where Bucky’s adult moth could rest. Add a caterpillar only as a drawing, and write “LOOK, DO NOT TOUCH” beside it. Think About It: What makes an oak tree more than just a tree when so many animals use its leaves, branches, bark, and leaf litter? Grandma’s reminder: “Bucky’s caterpillar may look like trouble, but the rule is simple: admire the oak branch from over there.”
