Knossos’s Pond-Edge Map

Do this with a grown-up near a pond, ditch, wetland, or rain-filled low area. Bring paper and a pencil. Stand far enough away that you do not step on wet plants, muddy edges, or small animals hiding near the water. Draw what you see. Add the water, grass, mud, leaves, shallow spots, and places where a frog could hide. Then draw one safe route Knossos could use to move between water and cover. You do not need to find a frog to do this activity. The goal is to notice why pond edges are important. They give frogs water, food, shade, hiding places, and places to raise young. Then answer these questions: Where could Knossos hide from a bird? Where might he find insects? Why does he need water nearby? Why should people stay out of muddy pond edges? What could hurt frogs if it washed into the water? Why should dogs watch frogs instead of chasing them? Grandma’s reminder: “Knossos does not need a giant pond. He needs clean water, quiet edges, and everybody else to quit stomping around.”
