Cardinal Color Count

Go outside with a grown-up in the morning or late afternoon. Bring paper, a pencil, and red and brown crayons or markers. Sit where you can see a tree, shrub, flower bed, or bird feeder. Watch quietly for five minutes. Look for colors that might help a cardinal: red flowers, brown branches, green leaves, orange seed shells, or dark shadows inside a shrub. Draw the yard spot you are watching. Add one place where Roy would be easy to see and one place where Renee could hide better. Then answer these questions: Which color stood out the most? Which color blended into the shrubs? Where could a cardinal find seeds? Where could a cardinal find insects? Where would Renee build a hidden nest? Why should dogs watch birds instead of chasing them? Grandmaโ€™s reminder: โ€œRoy handles the singing. Renee handles the details. That is why the nest gets finished.โ€
